But when the honeymoon is over, itll become brutally clear that the only thing youve gained is an office full of enemies and a bad break-up you cant avoid unless you ditch the job as well. Misfiring emails Drunk dialling and texting is a verwesen phenomenon that wreaks havoc on relationships and getting careless with technology in the office can also spell employment death. If you are overcome by a temporary bout of carelessness when you fling an email into cyberspace, it could come back to bite you badly. If an email bitching about the boss misfires and ends up in their inbox, you could be out of work quicker than it takes to hit Send. Be cautious of hitting Reply All, double-check recipients, and perhaps even steer clear of M-rated content altogether if you still want to be hooked up to that email account the following week. The good news for those looking to get fired is that 17 glasses of champagne is a fairly good way to speed up your trip to Sacksville. Whether you end up hitting on the boss in front of his wife and three kids, dumping a glass of Merlot into a clients lap or simply hijacking the karaoke microphone for the evening theres a fair chance youll have to face the real music when Monday morning comes around. Lying on your resume You were dux of your school, got a scholarship to study law at the countrys most prestigious university and graduated with first-class honours. You were then accepted into a top law firm and are now looking for new challenges. On the bac k of these impressive credentials, you blitzed the interview for this new job and are now sitting in a sweet office with an even sweeter salary. Theres only one small problem. Your resume and interview were based on an elaborate web of lies and now you are faced with a pile of work and no idea how to actually do any of it. It doesnt matter how convincingly you talk your way into a good gig, the lies will catch up with you very quickly and youll be back spouting them on the job-hunting trail quick smart. That time is not between nine and five and that place is definitely not within the confines of an office. Being inappropriate at work is bound to put a few noses out of joint and could even lead to charges of sexual harassment. Furthermore, non-business talk wastes more company dollars than any other activity, and whiling away the days gossiping by the water cooler or discussing your weekend escapades loudly on the phone could put the boss out of business if they dont put you out of their business first. If youre like me in the past, the answer is something like, all the time.Forming a new habit is hard. I dont have to tell you that. We all know how difficult it is to live a prosperous and healthy life. If it were easy, everybody would do it.We also know that our chance of succeeding is much higher if we start small, right? Its common sense. Dont take on too much in the beginning - youll have more reasons to give up. So goes the advice, which is solid. Im leid going to argue with that.But far too few people actually start small. In fact, I see more people starting big than starting small.Why is that? I think we can get too excited about making a change or doing new things. When we dream about making a change in our lives and start believing in it, the excitement usually takes over.Thats why we end up doing too mu ch too soon.But how can I prevent myself from getting too excited?To be clear, I dont think excitement is bad. You need energy to make a change. And its great to be fired up about achieving something in your life. Always remind yourself that you want to stay fired up. Because when things get hard, we can lose that fire.So when you start forming a habit (writing, working out, reading, eating healthy) or learning a new skill, remember that it should not feel like a challenge. The activity should be easy. If thats not the case, we all procrastinate - even the most self-disciplined people do that.When you start something new, its not about your results. When I started writing every day, I couldnt care less about how many words I wrote. Or when I started getting daily exercise, I didnt care what schrift of exercise. I just wanted to make sure I did it.Wrote for 4 minutes? Great - you did it.Went for a 20-minute walk? Great - you did it.Read a book for 2 minutes? Great - you did it.Ja mes Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, which is about changing your life by forming small habits, writes about this idea in his new book. I like how he removes all barriers for starting a habit. He writesA new habit should not feel like a challenge. The actions that follow can be challenging, but the first two minutes should be easy. What you want is a gateway habit that naturally leads you down a more productive path.Remember, the action itself is not easy. But as James says, the first two minutes should be easy. And what youll find is that you can scale down nearly any habit or activity into a two-minute version.Want to read every day? Read one page.Want to meditate every day? Sit in a meditation position.Want to study for an exam? Open your book.I like this strategy because it nearly makes it impossible to procrastinate. When I look back at all the times Ive procrastinated, it was always related to getting overwhelmed. When you havent even started something, the end result seems a million miles away.Thats how you end up saying, screw this. So instead of focusing on the BIG outcome, focus on the SMALL start. Look at what you want to achieve in your life. Then, look at what habits will make that happen.For example, want to be a CEO? Most leaders are readers. So you might want to start a daily reading habit. Then, scale down the habits you need to succeed into a two-minute activity.And then what?The goal is not only to get started - its to keep going. Nobody wants to read one page a day for the rest of their lives. To me, this strategy is all about getting used to doing something every day.Look, changing your lifestyle is not an easy thing. Lets say youve been living in a certain way for 30 years. What do you expect? That you change overnight? You and I both know that it takes time. So we should change our perspective accordingly.Your first priority should always be to form the habit - something you do regularly. And remember Habits are not about results.No one cares about how many pages youve read, how hard youve worked out, or how long you havent smoked a cigarette. You should only care about what you did today - and dont focus on metrics.Life is a competition with yourself - not others. Thats the contention of many online ads, at least.The idea is that companies are willing to pay for market research, so its valuable t o them to pay people to complete surveys. But like other scams (like envelope stuffing), theres no job here - you typically just pay a fee up front to learn how to get on the paid survey train, but get nothing in return.Some survey sites make you sign up for a paid membership before you can answer any surveys. The website takes your money and then no surveys materialize, Business finance writer Priyanka Prakash told Business Insider. Another problem is that each survey pays so little, it could take days to make even a dollar. And many survey sites ask for your personal information, putting you in danger of identity theft.Medical billing and codingTo be sure, there are medical billing and coding jobs that can be done from the comfort of your home many of the people who do this work do it on a contract basis in a home office.But scammers know this and offernon-existent medical billing jobs online. The scam, though, is that they charge you up front for training, software, and supplies needed to launch your own medical billing service.You can probably guess where this is going These companies generally have no connection to doctors, hospitals, or insurance companies and dont follow through with actual work.DrivingIf you have a car, youre a good driver, and enjoy being on the road during your off hours, then driving for a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft might be a good idea.But there are want ads out there for other driving services, and they arent the same sort of sure bet.Often, thesedriving job scammersoperate like the mystery shopping scam. They pay you up front, but for some reason theyll cancel your services and tell you to keep some of the money for yourself - just wire the remainder back. Of course, its a fraudulent check and you lose both the money you wire them and the cost of the bounced check.Cryptocurrency scamsSometimes it seems like everyone but you is making money in the world of cryptocurrency investing, and what better side hustle than one i n which you let technology and a little money build a fortune on your behalf?But the world of bitcoin and other nascent cryptocurrencies is a veritable minefield, and one which you genuinely need to understand before you have any hope of striking it rich.Crypto investors have been victimized by Ponzi schemes, for example, as well as straight-up fraudulent ICOs.OneCoin defrauded investorsto the tune of $3.8 billion, for example, with a non-existent cryptocurrency.
