Five Steps to Good Job Search Follow-Through

Five Steps to Good Job Search Follow-ThroughFive Steps to Good Job Search Follow-ThroughSend thank you letters. These should be personalized, so get the proper name and title of everyone you meet collect geschftsleben cards with each interview for this reason. You should write a follow up thank you to everyone you meet, not just the most senior person or the person with whom you had the best rapport. This is your professional face forward so be sure to write an engaging and thoughtful response, and of course, to check grammar and spelling.Return calls in a timely manner. Same day is ideal and no longer than next business day is acceptable. If you are going to be away longer than that, leave some indication on your outgoing voicemail. If you dont want to leave vacation plans on a home machine, direct callers to a number where you can be reached if its urgent. (If you decide to take cell phone calls on vacation, make sure you can be professional on the call. Otherwise youre better off letting it go to voicemail.)Respond to requests for additional info in a timely manner. If they ask for references, be prepared with a list that includes titles and contact info. If they ask for a writing sample, forward one within the timeframe requested. Keeping the hiring employer waiting shows a lack of interest or diligence or both. If you suggest an article the interviewer should read, forward a copy or the hyperlink. Make it easy for them to hire you.Be punctual in all meetings. Leave extra time to get through the building reception, especially in this era of heightened security. Leave extra time to fill out any paperwork at the HR reception area. Leave extra time to get lost, for train delays, for traffic, for extra breaths outside the building.Send indirect thank you letters. Thank everyone who gave you a lead, advice, any ounce of help. Let them know exactly what happened as a result of their gift to you. Let them know what happened at the end of your search. Even if they didnt give you the lead that led to your ultimate job, they helped move you forward and therefore deserve to hear from you.Caroline Ceniza-Levine is co-founder of SixFigureStart (www.sixfigurestart.com).

This strategy makes procrastination impossible

This strategy makes procrastination impossibleThis strategy makes procrastination impossibleHow often have you started a new habit that you already quit after several days? If youre like me in the past, the answer is something like, all the time.Forming a new habit is hard. I dont have to tell you that. We all know how difficult it is to live a prosperous and healthy life. If it were easy, everybody would do it.We also know that our chance of succeeding is much higher if we start small, right? Its common sense. Dont take on too much in the beginning - youll have more reasons to give up. So goes the advice, which is solid. Im leid going to argue with that. But far too few people actually start small. In fact, I see more people starting big than starting small. Why is that? I think we can get too excited about making a change or doing new things. When we dream about making a change in our lives and start believing in it, the excitement usually takes over.Thats why we end up doing too mu ch too soon. But how can I prevent myself from getting too excited? To be clear, I dont think excitement is bad. You need energy to make a change. And its great to be fired up about achieving something in your life. Always remind yourself that you want to stay fired up. Because when things get hard, we can lose that fire.So when you start forming a habit (writing, working out, reading, eating healthy) or learning a new skill, remember that it should not feel like a challenge. The activity should be easy. If thats not the case, we all procrastinate - even the most self-disciplined people do that. When you start something new, its not about your results. When I started writing every day, I couldnt care less about how many words I wrote. Or when I started getting daily exercise, I didnt care what schrift of exercise. I just wanted to make sure I did it.Wrote for 4 minutes? Great - you did it.Went for a 20-minute walk? Great - you did it.Read a book for 2 minutes? Great - you did it.Ja mes Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, which is about changing your life by forming small habits, writes about this idea in his new book. I like how he removes all barriers for starting a habit. He writesA new habit should not feel like a challenge. The actions that follow can be challenging, but the first two minutes should be easy. What you want is a gateway habit that naturally leads you down a more productive path.Remember, the action itself is not easy. But as James says, the first two minutes should be easy. And what youll find is that you can scale down nearly any habit or activity into a two-minute version.Want to read every day? Read one page.Want to meditate every day? Sit in a meditation position.Want to study for an exam? Open your book.I like this strategy because it nearly makes it impossible to procrastinate. When I look back at all the times Ive procrastinated, it was always related to getting overwhelmed. When you havent even started something, the end result seems a million miles away.Thats how you end up saying, screw this. So instead of focusing on the BIG outcome, focus on the SMALL start. Look at what you want to achieve in your life. Then, look at what habits will make that happen. For example, want to be a CEO? Most leaders are readers. So you might want to start a daily reading habit. Then, scale down the habits you need to succeed into a two-minute activity. And then what? The goal is not only to get started - its to keep going. Nobody wants to read one page a day for the rest of their lives. To me, this strategy is all about getting used to doing something every day.Look, changing your lifestyle is not an easy thing. Lets say youve been living in a certain way for 30 years. What do you expect? That you change overnight? You and I both know that it takes time. So we should change our perspective accordingly.Your first priority should always be to form the habit - something you do regularly. And remember Habits are not about results. No one cares about how many pages youve read, how hard youve worked out, or how long you havent smoked a cigarette. You should only care about what you did today - and dont focus on metrics.Life is a competition with yourself - not others. And if you want to win, you must make it easy for yourself.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDariusForoux.com.

8 side hustles that are actually scams

8 side hustles that are actually scams8 side hustles that are actually scamsNot only are we living in the age of the gig economy, were now officially living in the era of the side hustle. More than ever, folks with moxie are taking on after-hours challenges to supplement their day job.But not all side hustles are created equal. Some are lucrative and exciting, and can pay for your next vacation or catapult you into a new career. Others are simply scams, designed to separate you from your money.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThere are lots of valid opportunities out there. The concept of a side hustle is empowering and can change peoples lives. But if its promoted as an easy gig and sounds too good to be true, it probably is, Craig Markovitz, an assistant entrepreneurship professor at Carnegie Mellon Universitys Tepper School of Business, told Business Insider.Weve rounded up ei ght of the worst side hustles that will probably never earn you a dime. Because theyre scams. Steer clear.Mystery shopperNot all mystery shopper jobs are scams, of course. After all, there are real mystery shoppers. But as fun as the job sounds, themystery shopping field is overrun with scammers.Heres how it works The company sends you money in the gestalt of a check that youre supposed to deposit in your own bank account, which converts the cost of your first mystery shopping excursion. Youre instructed to test a stores in-house money transfer service by sending back some of the money you just got. Unfortunately, youve wired real money from your own account and eventually, when the bank realizes the original deposit was a fraudulent check, youre responsible for that, too.Multi-level marketing companiesMLMs, as theyre known, often have a veneer of respectability. After all, many of us (or our parents) grew up with brands like Avon, Amway, and Tupperware.Butmany MLM businesses behave more like pyramid schemes, prioritizing recruiting new members over actually selling product. If your potential MLM seems laser-focused on acquiring sellers rather than customers, thats a serious red flag.Other warning signs include costly training and seminars, pressure tactics to get you to buy inventory, and an uninspiring product line that has poor reviews or isnt something youd want to use yourself.Envelope stuffingIf youre looking for a low-pressure gig you can do from home in the evening, youve almost certainly seen ads for the opportunity to stuff envelopes. But dont get too excitedEnvelope stuffing is a scam. There are hundreds of jobs posted that claim to pay you for stuffing envelopes. Sadly, there isnt a single job available that will pay you to do this, Saranya Ramanathan, a personal finance blogger atOne Fine Wallet, told Business Insider.Heres the grift You are directed to send a small fee for instructions, after which you are instructed to recruit other people to buy t he saatkorn envelope-stuffing opportunity. Like a pyramid scheme, youre only paid if other people join in.Copy editing and writingThere are enough vorwort scams online to write a book, but one common one results in you performing pro bono editing for a faceless company. The con starts when you respond to an online ad looking for a writer or an editor. You conduct an online interview so theres no easy email audit trail, and youre given an assignment as the final step in the process. Youre asked to edit a project or write some sample articles but after you turn it in, you never hear from them again.Son Ngo, who was bitten by this particular scam, told Business Insider The enormous number of freelancers ensures that the agency can repeat this trick again and again.Paid online surveysDid you know that you can make money just by completing online surveys? Thats the contention of many online ads, at least. The idea is that companies are willing to pay for market research, so its valuable t o them to pay people to complete surveys. But like other scams (like envelope stuffing), theres no job here - you typically just pay a fee up front to learn how to get on the paid survey train, but get nothing in return. Some survey sites make you sign up for a paid membership before you can answer any surveys. The website takes your money and then no surveys materialize, Business finance writer Priyanka Prakash told Business Insider. Another problem is that each survey pays so little, it could take days to make even a dollar. And many survey sites ask for your personal information, putting you in danger of identity theft.Medical billing and codingTo be sure, there are medical billing and coding jobs that can be done from the comfort of your home many of the people who do this work do it on a contract basis in a home office. But scammers know this and offernon-existent medical billing jobs online. The scam, though, is that they charge you up front for training, software, and supplies needed to launch your own medical billing service. You can probably guess where this is going These companies generally have no connection to doctors, hospitals, or insurance companies and dont follow through with actual work.DrivingIf you have a car, youre a good driver, and enjoy being on the road during your off hours, then driving for a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft might be a good idea. But there are want ads out there for other driving services, and they arent the same sort of sure bet.Often, thesedriving job scammersoperate like the mystery shopping scam. They pay you up front, but for some reason theyll cancel your services and tell you to keep some of the money for yourself - just wire the remainder back. Of course, its a fraudulent check and you lose both the money you wire them and the cost of the bounced check.Cryptocurrency scamsSometimes it seems like everyone but you is making money in the world of cryptocurrency investing, and what better side hustle than one i n which you let technology and a little money build a fortune on your behalf? But the world of bitcoin and other nascent cryptocurrencies is a veritable minefield, and one which you genuinely need to understand before you have any hope of striking it rich.Crypto investors have been victimized by Ponzi schemes, for example, as well as straight-up fraudulent ICOs.OneCoin defrauded investorsto the tune of $3.8 billion, for example, with a non-existent cryptocurrency. The best advice Steer clear entirely.Heres how an expert recommends avoiding a scam side hustleThere are a lot of scams out there. Markovitz recommends doing your research on any potential company. Is the opportunity real? Ask the company to let you talk to people doing it already. If theyre reluctant, there might be a problem, he said. You can protect yourself by following these other common sense precautionsNever pay anything up front. Any potential gig should be paying you, not the other way around. You should avoid paying for equipment, training materials, or orientation instructions.Dont deposit a check with the intention of sending some or all of that money back to the employer right away. While there are sometimes legitimate reasons for doing this, the reality is that its far too easily the centerpiece of fraud.Dont work for free. Its okay to demonstrate your skills as a part of an interview, but do it in a way that leverages work youve already done, or you might find yourself working for someone for free without realizing it.They offer you too much money, or hire you too easily, without seeming especially curious about your skills, background, experience, or potential.Beware of opportunities that dont tell you anything about the company thats allegedly doing the hiring, or who rely on chat and conferencing rather than email for routine communication. If it feels weird, it is weird. Walk away. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

How to find inspiration at work when you dont love your job

How to find inspiration at work when you dont love yur jobHow to find inspiration at work when you dont love your jobWhen every day is a tough day for you at work, its easy to wallow in your feelings. But there are ways to make the most of your position by thinking of something deeper than your day-to-day work, like its meaning and your purpose.First of all, what are meaning and purpose? While people may throw the terms around, they can be vague and hand-wavey.But meaning can be more concrete. Morten Hansen and Dacher Keltner offer some insight on the former word in a 2012 Harvard Business Review article. The phrase meaning at work refers to a persons experience of something meaningful - something of value - that work provides. That is not the same as meaningful work, which refers to the value of the task itself. Work is a social arena that provides other kinds of meaningful experiences as well, they write. Many of us already take that to be true we spend a third of our lives at work - if not more - and it shapes our personalities and our priorities. Work occupies a place of privilege in our calendars, and when it doesnt make us happy things can seem very dark.Heres how to get to the place you want to be when you feel down.1. Find out what you wantOne of the hardest parts of deciding how to fix your unhappiness is by deciding what will make you happy at work. To make it easier, try to write a mission stellungnahme for your career I am a person who connects others and , for instance.Dan Pontefract wrote about making a personal declaration of purpose in a 2016 Harvard Business Review article. If you have never created a personal declaration of purpose, now is the time. The declaration is a simple statement about how you decide to live each and every day. Make it succinct, specific, jargon-free, and expressive. Your statement ought to be personal, and it should integrate your strengths, interests, and core ambitions. For example, heres mine Were not here to see t hrough each other were here to see each other through, Pontefract writes. He adds that your should also include the three kinds of purpose, personal, job and organization, but University of Victoria professor A. R. Elangovan also told Pontefract that your shouldnt fail to incorporate enough of the personal portion, which reportedly happens often. The professor thinks one should spend as much or more energy looking into personal purpose.2. Adopt a big-picture mindsetStacey Lastoe writes about the advice Adam Smiley Poswolsky, author of the book The Quarter-Life Break-Through, gave her in the The Muses NYC office in an article for the publication. She defined your breakthrough moment as that moment of opportunity and possibility when you discover why youre doing what youre doing and what you want to give to the world, adding that he says its a continuous process, among other information he mentions.Poswolsky said, Dont focus on figuring out your one why, worry less about the one answer, and more about asking the right questions What do you care about? What gets you fired up? What injustice infuriates you? What types of people do you enjoy spending time with? What types of articles do you find yourself posting on Facebook? What challenge is worthy of your time, not for your whole life, but right now?3. Watch someone else do different workSwitch things up by seeing how different work is carried out to get out of your own head.Todd Berger, president and CEO of Chicago-based Redwood Logistics, told Inc. about how gets inspired shadowing a colleague.Maybe a certain process of theirs can give you an idea of how to do something differently that will make you more productive. If anything, it will spark different conversations, which will spark ideas, Berger said.It also doesnt have to be a colleague. If a musician or sports star is your inspiration, examine how they work how they manage details, how they talk to their band members or teammates, or how they present themsel ves. It may give you ideas for your own job.4. When you can, surround yourself with different peopleErika Andersen writes about the power of ditching the haters at work in a 2013 Forbes article. While theres a certain mean-spirited, self-righteous satisfaction in taking the everyones-a-loser-but-us approach, in the long run it will just make you more unhappy. Hearing only the negatives about your workplace makes it hard to see the positives that may exist, and it ultimately will make you feel worse about yourself (if this place and these people are so awful, why am I still here?). Spending time with colleagues who have a more balanced view can dramaticallyshift your emotional response to your job, Andersen writes. But if your experiences at work are so stressful that you want to search for a new one, weigh your options and proceed the way you see fit. If that means looking for a new one, do as much research as possible.Just remember you are more than your position.

Time Management Tips for Busy Hiring Professionals

Time Management Tips for Busy Hiring ProfessionalsHiring professionals are well aware of the importance of keeping the interview process moving along. One way to do this is by practicing proper time management consistently throughout the workday. A hiring manager who focuses on using their time effectively is able to oversee a hiring process that is airtight, while directing their attention to the key parts of the talent acquisition process. Here are four time management best practices for hiring managersUse a scheduling toolSending emails back and forth to schedule interviews may not seem time-consuming. The amount of time invested adds up when youre stuck in a never-ending email chain with multiple candidates.Fortunately, an interview scheduling tool can eliminate the need for this constant back and forth. The software makes it easy to figure out the details like when and where youll meet with candidates. This eliminates the need for apologies due to any delays in response. This wa y, youre able to take the focus off replying to emails in a prompt fashion. Instead, you can shift your attention to the more crucial parts of the hiring process, such as whether an individual would be an appropriate long-term fit at your business. Many hiring managers arent initially aware that such a piece of software exists. However, once they incorporate it into their hiring process, they begin to wonder how they expanded their gruppe without it.Use a scheduling tool to focus on more important parts of the hiring process.Click To TweetMake use of video interview technologyIn the past, those tasked with talent acquisition had to bring in each and every candidate they were considering for a face-to-face conversation. This limited them to the talent pool in the surrounding area because of budget constraints, and also it made a drawn-out hiring process. Fortunately, video interviewing technology has made hiring easier and more cost-effective. Now, a hiring professional can have appli cants record a video response to prompts, which the manager can then watch at their convenience. This may be on a lunch break, while in line to grab a coffee, or even in the waiting room at the dentists office. When they get another free chunk of time, they can return and watch the other applicants responses. Its no longer necessary to have hours of free time in buchung to continue moving forward with the hiring process. Upon completion, they can opt to bring the most appropriate candidates in for an in-person conversation.Dont be afraid to delegateWhile a hiring professional needs to be invested in the process from start to finish, its important not to forget to delegate when appropriate. You dont want to become so far removed from the process that you cant accurately assess a candidate. This is a great opportunity to rely on your kollektiv for assistance.Dividing up tasks and assigning them to other members on the team allows the hiring process to keep moving. Whats more, it enabl es the manager to focus their attention on only the most essential parts of the process. Asking for help is a smart way to prevent your divided time and attention from grinding your interview process to a halt.Keep the interview process going by delegating tasks to team members.Click To TweetBuild a portfolio of potential talentWhile you want to be open to new talent each time you have a job opening, continuously starting from scratch makes the process even more time-consuming. You have to completely vet all of the candidates you see. Instead, store them for a later use if you receive strong resumes that may not be the right fit at that moment. This way, if a position that better suites the candidate becomes available, you can easily contact them and encourage them to apply. This eliminates the need to start from square one every time you have to hire.Using time management tools and strategies enables hiring managers to keep the interview process moving at an appropriate pace. Profe ssionals are better-suited to devote their limited energy to the most essential parts of the process when they spend their time more effectively.

3 Major Differences Between Consulting and Startup Life

3 Major Differences Between Consulting and Startup Life3 Major Differences Between Consulting and Startup LifeAndrew Faircloth and Brent Macon were management consultants for three years (Andrew with Bain Co., Brent with McKinsey Co.). They startedPrimer Sportsin August 2015 to help outgoing professionals use sports to connect with people in the workplace and beyond. Both are first-time entrepreneurs. This is the third in a series of posts for Vault in which they discuss some of the issues they have faced so far in their jurney from consultants to entrepreneurs, and how their career experiences to date have helped them.We enjoyed consulting and would recommend it to anyone its a dynamic environment to learn from great people and develop at an amazing rate. At the same time, we felt compelled to get some different experience early in our careers. Launching a startup wasnt always the plan, but we hatched an idea together upon realizing that we were both frustrated with the existing s ports media landscape during busy work weeks. The goal became simpleStep 1 - try to create something that keeps professionals abreast of the radar-worthyhappenings in sports, whether thats major news, a crazy play, or an interesting article that you might not otherwise see.Step 2 - get tons of feedback, iterate and grow, and turn it into a viable business. Were solidly in step 2, and its been an interesting journey since launching in August. We anticipated many of the ups and downs of startup life, but there are certainly elements you cant predict until youre out in the arena trying it. We often get asked to comment on the major differences between management consulting and running Primer. In honor of the consulting framework, here are three major differences (besides the absence of a healthy direct deposit)1. Lack of outside structure a blessing and a curseA great element of consulting is how much direction and feedback you get, both in the macro and in your day-to-day work. Project s tend to be well-scoped, you know if youre working on the right things, and you know if youre doing a good job. If you come to a place where you feel stuck, its usually clear how to get help and push forward. Success is highly correlated with elbow grease. Theres little outside influence in a startup, especially in the earliest stage before investor and advisor relationships add structure. Theres no one to tell you if your strategic priorities make sense to focus on, if youre attacking a problem the right way, or even how to structure your days. You decide when to platzdeckchen the alarm and start the grind, and youre the sole arbiter of how hard to work and what to work on. That feeling of control is empowering, but can also leave room for second-guessing yourself and overthinking things. Ben Horowitz said the most important thing for a CEO to manage is their own psychology, and he nailed it (per usual). 2. How to Become a Successful Business Woman

How to Become a Successful Business WomanHow to Become a Successful Business WomanAt one time or aelendlageher, we have all questioned whether we have what it takes to make it in geschftlicher umgang. There are countless checklists and personality assessments available online to supposedly help you determine your natural business aptitude. They can be fun, thought-provoking, and interesting, but it would be best to ignore the results. Most of these tests ask questions like are you an optimist? or, are you a good leader? They pose the clich and superficial questions are you creative? and do you work well with people? So how do you learn if you can be a successful entrepreneur? Check out this advice on determining your leadership potential and three qualities of a strong businesswoman you can develop with some effort. No Clichs Allowed No one is an optimist all of the time and being overly optimistic at the wrong time can actually lead to making poor business decisions. A successfu l businesswoman often needs to be a team player- or serve as an inspiration- and not insist on always being in the lead. Having an open mind is far more important than being a creative person and rather than claiming to be a people person, it is much more useful to have a good understanding of the people you will be working with. For example, working with family members is a far different thing from working with unrelated employees, and alfruchtwein everyone can get along with easy-going folks. So shouldnt the question really be, can you work with difficult, annoying, and whiny folks? because these are the customers and employees you are most likely to hear from- the ones with concerns, complaints, and demands. All people cannot be lumped into one category, so being a people person is not a requirement in business. mora important is the ability to put your personal feelings aside to make logical, fact-based business decisions- not emotional decisions to please other people. Three Qualities to Develop There are three very simple qualities entrepreneurs should have- or be willing to develop- that are meaningful assets for starting and ansturmning a business successfully. Notice the keyword here is develop, not already have- the desire, willingness, and ability to learn new skills and habits can contribute to any businesswomans success. One of these qualities is an attitude you can adopt, one is a skill that can be easily learned, and the third is a personality trait few of us come by naturally but which can be mastered with a little practice. Best Business Attitude A refusal to quit when things get tough. Most Valuable Skill Networking. Networking. Networking.Strongest Personality Trait Having thick skin (being objective). Business Attitude An optimist might look at the bright side of things and serve as an inspiration to keep pressing forward, but a pessimist may assess things more realistically and make less risky decisions. Either way, it is not necess arily how youseea situation, but how yourespondto a situation that will either hinder or facilitate your success in business. A true entrepreneurial attitude requires refusing to quit when things get tough. Even the most successful entrepreneurs have to do things that they are not happy about in the short-term but are glad they did in the long-run. In fact, some people who see an accomplishment as less than ideal may work harder to achieve even better results. Refusing to give up on something should not be confused with just being stubborn- the key difference between being stubborn and being tenacious is that stubbornness stands in denial of a problem refusing to accept a need for change, while a can do attitude works through problems by considering a variety of solutions. Business Skill Few things will help you establish and grow your business faster than creating a strong network. No one person knows it all or can do it all, so if you isolate yourself and your thoughts, you is olate your business as well. Having access to a variety of resources can increase your efficiency and knowledge, your business publicity, and your chances of succeeding. If you do not have much face-to-face contact with others in your field, you can still work on building a business network in other ways. Start by joining professional groups online, developing press releases, brochures, and other written communications. Another great way to buildnetworksis to simply participate in forums, e-mail discussion lists, and chat rooms that somehow relate to your business or the type of customer you want to attract. Use personal and othersocial opportunitiesto network yourself and your business and always have abusiness cardhandy when an opportunity to make business connections presents itself. Personality Trait If you take everything personally you will have a much harder time accepting ideas and change, and you will never get the most out of your business or your employees. Having a t hick skin is crucial to success, as you will need to be willing tolisten tonew ideasandactively solicit the opinions of others. Always treasure new ideas and opposing opinions, dont rebuke them. The ability to accept constructive criticism will help your business stay on the cutting edge and avoid potential problems you might not be able to see on your own. By showing that you value the opinions and advice of others, you will appear more approachable to your peers, employees, and customers. Even if you do not actually follow others suggestions, the more you ask what they think, the more valued they will feel and the more loyalty they will have to you and your business. In other words, simply by soliciting input from other people you create a positive mini-public relations network. People will talk about you and how your business is run so you should help them find positive things to talk about. Getting Started Networking BeginningsAsk others about their challenges, successes, an d if they have any advice about your own business ideas. This is the first step to begin building your network.Do Not Give UpWhen they say you are crazy, listen to their concerns, but dont just give up on your idea. Instead, reassess its value from other points of view. To evaluate if you have what it takes to make it in business you do not need to answer questions in self-assessment quizzes instead, you should be asking your own questions. Talk to other businesswomen, peers, colleagues, family, and friends- anyone you might be able to learn from. Just be sure to listen to the answers with more than just your ears and remember, it helps to have a thick skin.
